Ten years after the great recession, Italy remains stagnant. The GDP increased by 0.4% in the second quarter of 2017, however, the level is still lower than in the same period of 2010. Italy has been growing continuously since the beginning of 2015, but it is below the average European Political instability and the crisis in the banking sector are taking their toll. Despite this, Brussels estimates a growth of 1.1% for 2018, but unemployment -especially youth unemployment that is close to 40%.

According to the Italy in figures report, prepared by the Italian Statistical Institute (ISTAT), Italy is today a poorer country, where there is more fiscal pressure than 10 years ago and the number of unemployed has multiplied. Consumption continues to be stagnant and public and private debit levels remain high. «The situation today is much worse than 10 years ago because we continue adopting austerity policies.
